PC Problem Solving - P D Thompson

Looking for a solution to a PC or broadband problem ? You've come to the right place.

Based near Peterborough I do home or office visits in the Peterborough Stamford Uppingham Oundle area, or a bit further out if the job is particularly interesting or lucrative !
I work from home, or as my wife would say I live at work.

Hammer man My fee for home users is £36 per hour (inc VAT) with a minimum charge of £24. If you're worried about the cost we can agree a maximum in advance.

Phone mobile 07768 796684 or landline 01780 783329.

Businesses usually demand a higher level of service and a faster response for which I charge £40 per hour plus VAT.

Got a problem with spam ? I have some light reading that may help you to restrict it and avoid getting it in the first place.

Broadband problems are a speciality of mine, but first I suggest you work through my ADSL self help page as quite often you can help yourself.

I often use free security tools rather than the paid for products from Symantec, McAfee etc. They come out equally well in comparative tests and you obviously save money and avoid annual renewals, recurring credit card charges and other hassle. In my daily work I remove virus and trojan infections from PCs that in most cases were "protected" by one or other security package - none are 100% effective and with a new virus it is more like 65%.

Broken laptop
If you have a laptop with a damaged screen or a broken power socket then I suggest you contact either ACR Computers in Stamford or Cambridge Laptop Repair both of whom have done a good job for my customers in the past. I will take on most repairs to desktop computers but laptops are time consuming, fiddly and consequently expensive - caveat emptor (buyer beware) !

I have experience with Windows XP, Vista (unfortunately) and Windows 7 on desktop, laptop and netbook PCs along with limited experience of Mac OSX. My own desktop PC runs Ubuntu Linux and I have worked with other versions of Linux on desktop, laptop and netbook PCs. My mobile phone runs Android which is also an Open Source operating system based on Linux. I have also worked on VoIP systems using Trixbox / Asterisk IP telephony platforms.

Where possible I use Free / Open Source software as it's free which means no purchase cost but also freedom to use it on multiple computers, to pass it on to others or even to modify it. Obviously the Microsoft monopoly means I work daily with Microsoft products, but it's always good to know there are alternatives out there that aren't encumbered with restrictive licenses or long product keys that you can never find when you need them.
